Episode 10: Amy Rigby

Amy Rigby photo by Ted BarronAmy Rigby weaves observational wit and interpersonal scenarios into songs that are perceptive, genuine and easily relatable. Amy shares professional ties with our three previous guests, Bill DeMain, Brad Jones and David Scott (see below).

Amy also shared some wonderful stories about how she helped build a live music scene in New York.  We moved that segment here for overall length and because the associated music wasn't available to us digitally, so we couldn't sprinkle in appropriate music clips.  She mentions several associated bands and artists from that time and place and she describes these fond moments quite vividly.

Amy Rigby Amy Rigby Brad Jones Wait Til I Get You Home
Straight to the point -- NO to public displays of affection and YES to more cowbell.

On the production side, the lead guitar supports the melody in two important ways: 1) By stating a reduced version of "Wait Til I Get You Home" in the intros (try singing those words over the guitar riff!), and 2) since there's a long break after each of the verse's first two lines, by adding a simple melodic guitar response to those lines.  In a solo performance, that guitar response could be replaced with an "mmm-hmm" vocal.

Shopping Around
My mama told me, "You'd better shop around."   OK, but what if it's all shopping and no stopping?

Notice how the backing vocals cleverly reinforce the lyrics, at a pace that's independent of the lead vocal.

Amy Rigby Amy Rigby Brad Jones Magicians
A song of brutally honest self-awareness.

L
isten as Amy delivers a vocal that's bravely vulnerable yet always in control -- especially when she sings "We're magicians" for the last time, holding out the final note of the previous choruses and then delicately singing one note higher, on just a wisp of breath.  Magical.

In our interview, Amy explains how this song -- and its music video == were inspired by watching Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, performing a deadpan Karaoke version of a Tom Petty song.
